Consumer rights and protection law provides a way for individuals to fight back against abusive business practices.
These laws are designed to hold sellers of goods and services accountable when they seek profit by taking advantage of a consumer’s lack of information or bargaining power.
In a move aimed at protecting its customers, Samsung Electronics has launched an SMS check off point buying system dubbed e-warranty to enable consumers to identify genuine Samsung phones through the phone’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identification).
The e-warranty platform offers customers of all Samsung phone the unique opportunity of checking the originality of their handsets. One of the biggest challenges in the mobile industry in Tanzania today, is that the market is flooded with fake, stolen, refurbished and non-warranty phones.
It is difficult for the consumer to figure what is genuine and what is not. Samsung believes that consumers would like to have a service that would allow them to check the status of any phone that they are buying and as such have provided the platform to enable this.
This warranty applies to 15 African countries whereby to obtain this warranty, users must register for the e-warranty service on local Samsung official site.
Apart from Tanzania, Customers of the following 15 African countries as well have this extra service with no cost at all: South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Sudan, Ethiopia, Namibia, Zambia, Mauritius, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Angola, Botswana and Mozambique.
