Shortage of school teachers and pit latrines remains a serious challenge that afflicts the primary school community at Kimandaguli in Lyabukande Ward, Shinyanga District.
The dire situation forced the entire school to help themselves in a pit latrine located at the residential area of the headteacher.
According to the headteacher, Mathia Midati, there are 490 pupils at the school and the only dilapidated latrine with two holes could not accommodate the number plus the eight teachers at the school.
“The only headteacher’s house, which itself is rundown with cracks all over could not contain both boys and girls at the school together with school teachers.
This is a serious challenge which needs to be addressed. However, the village chairman, Mr Sostenace Maganga, said that the village with the population of more than 200 households has agreed to contribute 10,000/- each and come together under self-help spirit to make bricks for the needed toilets and houses for school teachers.
The Area Councillor, Mr Joseph Misiri, confirmed the beginning of collection of contributions from families ready for implementation of the projects, staff quarters and pit latrines.
He also spoke about ongoing efforts to communicate with higher authorities for deployment of more teachers at the school as the number (eight) at present was not enough.
“This year only one school teacher was posted to this school and a number of them previously deployed to the school deserted the area due to lack of accommodation,” Mr Misiri said.
