Six killed, 21 injured in Tanga ‘daladala’ horror


Six people died and 21 others seriously injured in an accident, which took place at Kange area in Tanga city after a commuter bus collided with a lorry.

The accident, which took place at 7:45pm on Saturday, involved a commuter bus, which was heading to Pongwe from the Tanga Central Bus Stand through the Tanga-Segera Highway.

The Tanga Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Constantine Massawe, confirmed the accident, which involved a commuter bus with registration number T 9O9 ATV and a truck with registration number T260BMY.

Mr Massawe attributed the accident on carelessness on the part of the commuter bus driver who tried to overtake another vehicle at high speed.

“This driver was speeding and without taking much care, he tried to overtake another car ahead but failed to make it as another vehicle was coming closer,” he said.

The RPC added that sensing the danger ahead, the commuter bus driver attempted to force his vehicle back to his lane but in vain.


We have always been advising drivers to take serious safety measures in observing the rules to avoid accidents” he said. He mentioned the dead persons as Raymond Mapunda (28), Halima Shaka (28), Mary Chilongoi (37), Gloria Kidenya (1), Femida John (38), and Gabriel Wilkaeli (44).

According to the RPC, all the dead bodies have already been identified and collected by their relatives. A nurse on duty at the Tanga Regional Hospital, Bombo, Ms Alice Mnkande, said they received six dead bodies and 21 injured persons.

She said six among the injured were discharged after treatment while 15 others have been admitted. She described their condition as satisfactory.

The RPC advised all drivers to be careful while on the road to avoid unnecessary accidents, which end up claiming the lives of so many people.
