The Vodacom Foundation on Tuesday launched a countrywide Community Power Project geared towards providing solar power to schools that do not have access to electricity, while students were urged to utilise it to improve their studies.
This development comes at a time when the government is getting ready to achieve one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which aims at proving affordable and easy access to education for all.
Speaking during the launch at Janguo Secondary School, Kisarawe District, Coast Region, Suraya Hamdulay, Vodacom Group Head of Corporate Citizenship, expressed hope that Community Power Project will go a long way in boosting education standards in the country.
“This is the pioneering school to have access to this project in Tanzania. We look forward to spread as many other schools as possible. “This project is environmental friendly and is aimed at giving students a good-learning atmosphere, something that will avail them more time to study hence improve on their performance,” said Hamdulay.
The Kisarawe District Commissioner, Fatma Iddi, who was the chief guest during the launch, expressed her gratitude to Vodacom Foundation for seeing the need to launch this project, adding that students have all the time to study.
“I urge students to make well use of this project to improve their grades. I believe that they from now on will have plenty of time to study, bearing in mind that this project will provide them with enough light in the evening. This is a great initiative and I am grateful to Vodacom Foundation for the move,” said Iddi.
According to Vodacom Foundation Head, Yessaya Mwakifulefule, more than 6 billion/- has been set aside by the Foundation to support the country’s education sector this year. “Education is key to the development of this economy.
Vodacom Foundation is working tirelessly to make sure that education standards are improved,” said Mwakifulefule. He added: “Today we have also donated six computers to this school, all of which are connected to Vodacom Internet. We want our students to also acquire and develop their technological skills in order to be able to compete with the entire world.”
