South Sudan security crisis claim lives of two Kenyans


NAIROBI, KENYA: Two Kenyans have been killed and another six injured in the ongoing security crisis in South Sudan.

The six suffered gunshot wounds from stray bullets during the fighting in Juba and Bor. A press release on the situation of South Sudan confirms that four other Kenyans injured in Juba were admitted, treated and discharged from an hospital in Juba and  later evacuated with the assistance of the Embassy on 18th December 2013.

“So far two Kenyans have been killed and another six have suffered from gunshot wounds from stray bullets during the fighting in Juba and Bor,” said the statement.

About 1000 Kenyans have sought refuge at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan compound in Bor and another 60 have sought refuge in the WFP and UNMISS Camps in Bentiu. Others who sought refuge at the UNMISS compound in Juba left when calm resumed in the city.


On Saturday morning, President Uhuru Kenyatta sent General Lazaro Sumbeiywo to Juba, South Sudan as a Special Envoy to lend his considerable prestige and commitment to the search for a peaceful solution. Gen. Sumbeiywo has arrived and started engaging the parties.

Amb. Amina Mohammed, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has also called on the Kenyan private sector that is invested in South Sudan to join hands with the government in giving assistance to the people of South Sudan with the understanding that  shared prosperity is reliant on ensuring that the region is peaceful and open for Kenyan investment and skills.
