The Zanzibar government has been advised to promote the revival of the growing of cloves to keep the name of ‘spice islands’ alive. The advice was given by Mr Hassan Hamad Omar (CUF – Kojani), during question and answer period of the House session.
Mr Omar said that the government should spare no efforts in motivating clove farming. “Zanzibar is known globally as “the spice islands” because of admirable production in 1950s to 1970s.
But unfortunately we no longer export cloves as before because of poor planning on the part of the government,” said Mr Omar. In response to the concerns, the deputy minister for Trade, Industries, and Marketing Ms Thuwaiba Kissassi admitted that it was unfortunate that the cloves produced at the moment are insufficient for export.
“We currently export small amounts of cloves. Other spices are produced at a small scale, for local consumption and tourists who come to Zanzibar,” said the deputy minister as she called upon farmers to grow more spices.
