Sports Illustrated under fire for ‘racist’ photoshoot where white models pose with African tribesman and Chinese man in a cone hat

New York, Feb. 16 (ANI): The newest edition of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue is in hot water, after critics charged that the global pictorials are racist and reinforce bad stereotypes.

Critics lambasted the magazine, currently on the news stands, for pairing a Caucasian model with a man in tribal garb carrying a spear for the Namibia shoot

This year the swimsuit issue decided on a seven continents theme but instead of sticking to exotic backdrops, some of the models are featured standing next to people allegedly representing the various countries-an editorial decision that makes the “native people” tantamount to exotic props, the Huffington Post reported.

In its latest swimsuit issue, now on sale, Sports Illustrated featured a white, blonde model sitting on a raft in China operated by a man wearing a typical cone hat

In the shot taken on a river in Guilin, Guangxi, model Anne V., who is white and blonde, sits on a raft that is piloted by an elderly Chinese man:

The second controversial shot, features Emily DiDonato in an African desert, which also includes a tribal-looking, half-naked man carrying a spear. (ANI)

Model Jessica Gomes holds the swimsuit issue showing the China spread that has drawn fire from critics
