More than 30 families have been rendered homeless following strong winds that swept across Kakese Village in Sumbawanga Municipality in Rukwa Region, over the weekend.
The strong winds wreaked havoc to four among the six affected areas in Kakese Village which lasted for more than two hours while affected families left their houses and sought refuge from other safe places while some of them are reported to be sharing houses with their neighbours.
The Acting Sumbawanga Municipal Director, Mr Kassim Sengusa, told the ‘Daily News’ on Tuesday during an exclusive interview held in his office here in the Municipality that about 28 houses have been damaged.
The other damaged buildings, according to Mr Sengusa, includes four staff quarters which were accommodating health personnel and teachers. In addition, two classrooms and a toilet at Kakese Primary School have completely been destroyed as well as a Roman Catholic Church which was partially damaged .
“Kakese Village has six areas of which four of them whose residents have been affected by the strong winds include Nakupamba Mwenge, Tala and Mambo popularly known as Kambi ya Ufugaji, however, no casualty has been reported so far .” added Mr Sengusa .
According to him, an assessment team has already been assembled and already been dispatched to the scene to quantify the actual damage caused by the winds .
A cross- section of the affected families interviewed by this paper at different occasions today called upon government, institutions and businesspeople to avail them with humanitarian assistance including temporary shelters and relief food.
