TanRoads, Chinese firms ink road contracts


The government signed three contracts with four Chinese companies worth 192.8bn/- covering construction of roads in Mtwara and Ruvuma region.

Speaking during the contract signing ceremony, the TANROADS Chief Executive Eng Patrick Mfugale said the first contract involves construction of the road from Namtumbo to Tunduru which was previously contracted to an Indian firm Progressive Higleig Joint Company but failed to complete.

He said the work will be divided to three construction companies; whereby the first contract for construction of the 868.20 km road from Namtumbo to Kilimasera had been contracted to China Railway Seventh Group Co. Ltd.

Mr Mfugale said the 58.70 km road from Matemanga to Tunduru has been handed over to another Chinese firm known as China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

Eng Mfugale also said the contract for construction of the road from Kilimasera to Matemanga of 60.70 km will be signed after getting the permission from the Africa Development Bank (ADB).

The other two contracts that have been signed were for the construction of the road from Tunduru-Mangaka to Mtambaswala whereby; the first contract for constructing 70.50km from Mangaka to Nakapanya was signed between TANROADS and Jiangxi Geo- Engineering Group Corporation.

The other contract for constructing 66.50 km from Nakapanya to Tunduru was also signed with Sinohydro Corporation Ltd.

When delivering his remarks during the signing ceremony the Guest of honour Dr John P. Magufuli (MP), Minister of Works ,acknowledged ADB and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for their support in loans advanced for roads construction in the country.


“We appreciate the work that you’re doing in our country, you have acted like a catalyst in this project and I can say you are our real partners of development”, he said.

He added that the construction of the roads in the southern regions will serve a lot, people in those regions and will eventually boost the economy.

He also argued contractors to make sure that they perform their work as per assigned agreements because there will be no excuse to the contractors who will fail to meet the agreed standards. He further argued contractors to go and start mobilization soon after signing the contracts.

“You better not sign the contract if you’re not going to start mobilization soon and if possible start next week,” , he argued.

The signing ceremony was also attended by representatives from JICA and ADB as well as Members of Parliament(MPS),District Commissioners and Regional Commissioners from Mtwara and Ruvuma regions.
