The government has directed all departments and public organisations to get a special permit from the Prime Minister’s Office in the event that they want to procure a vehicle whose engine capacity is over 3000cc.
Deputy Minister for Finance, Ms Saada Salum Mkuya
Such an office should get a special permit before it procured such a car as the government had started buying vehicles whose capacity was below 3000cc.
Deputy Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs, Ms Saada Salim Mkuya, said in Parliament on Tuesday that even as they had made such a decision, there were some challenges including the fact that smaller cars could not confront roads in some parts of the country, which legitimized moves by such areas to continue procuring and using big cars.
Mfenesini MP, Mr Nassib Omar, had wanted to know why some government officials use Land Cruiser cars which were fuel guzzlers and more expensive to maintain.
He also wanted to know when the government would issue loans to its officers so they could buy cars and use their own vehicles in order to cut government expenditure on expensive cars.
