Tanzania miss out on volleyball World Cup

Tanzania national women’s volleyball team’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup have vanished into thin air after failing to shine in the second round of the Africa Zone Five qualifiers that ended over the weekend in Uganda.

In the event, which commenced last Thursday and ended two days ago, Tanzania lost their three games against African champions Kenya, Egypt and host’s Uganda. The Chairman of the Tanzania Volleyball Association (TAVA) Augustine Agapa said despite the team failing to perform well in the event , they are proud to finish fourth position for being among 12 teams which participated in the Zone Five preliminaries in Kenya last July.

“We did not succeed to do well in the tournament, but we thank God that we have tried our best as it was our first time to participate in the World Cup qualifiers,” he said. Teams for the play-offs are Kenya, Egypt and Uganda which will face other winners from other zones in the continent to get two teams that will represent Africa in the World Cup to be held in Italy next year.

The Tanzania national squad was expected to return home yesterday. Meanwhile, TAVA in collaboration with the Africa Volleyball Confederation have organised a Sports Administration course to be held in Tanga from October 24- 30 this year. TAVA said the course to be attended by various volleyball stakeholders will be conducted by an instructor from Sudan.
