Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS) is among five national associations that have been appointed to the International Federations of Red Cross (IFRC) societies.
A statement issued in Dar es Salaam by the TRCS President, Dr George Nangale, said Tanzania was elected to the board during the election held in Sydney, Australia.
In the elections, Africa had 13 competing countries whereas Tanzania emerged winner after scooping 118 votes leading the African countries pool.
He said by attaining position to the world body, TRCS has made history since it has never had that opportunity in its 50 years of existence.
“The elections were hotly contested, but we are happy that the trust our colleagues has on us made us emerge victors”, he said.
He said that in order to capitalize fully on the new slot, Tanzania has to serve the interests of not only the country but Africa as a whole to ensure that they reach their intended goals during the four-year term.
During the elections, Tadateru Konoe was re-elected IFRC President while The Vice-Presidents are Abbas Gullet (Kenya), Osvaldo Ferrero (Argentina), Dr Baige Zhao (China) and Francesco Rocco (Italia).
