Entrepreneurs have been advised to attend business training courses to be aware of new technological opportunities so as to cope with the needs of the market.
The advice was given by a participant to the third meeting of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Research Organization (STIPRO) in Dar es Salaam.
Ms Esther Mkenda said the majority of entrepreneurs in the country did not value training, although it was important for them to help them advance in their business.
“When they don’t get any training they complain. For sure the government is investing a lot into seminars and workshops…but those who attend are only a third of those in business,” she said.
She said also that those invited for training ask for incentives such as allowances even before they attend the respective courses. Prof Benedict Mongula, chairperson of the meeting and board member of STIPRO, called for research to analyze issues which hinder entrepreneurs from attending training courses meant for their business advancement.
“There is a need for research to be done in this area because I believe that serious entrepreneurs value training,” he said. However, another paper presenter, Mr Musambya Mutambala, who is an assistant researcher with STIPRO, contended that university graduates viewed doing business unfit for them.
“Graduates prefer to stay in the office. There is a need for them to change their mindset because business can be done by anybody for their economic and social development,” he said.
