Teaching good study skills to children

Taking the time to encourage positive learning skills in children will help them be better prepared for each level of their education. Children need guidance as they learn to study. A little time and patience will ensure that your child is ready to face the academic challenges that will meet him in his educational journey.

Routine Study Time

Routine study time is vital as children are taught the importance of positive learning habits. Nothing should detract from the time a child is supposed to study. Parents should set aside time every week day in which the child does her homework, prepares class projects, researches for reports and prepares for test.

Time should also be set aside on one day every weekend so that the child is able to prepare for Monday’s classes. Parents should be consistent in requiring that homework time is observed. If study time is important to parents and guardians, the child will find it important as well.

Organization

Children need to be taught organization in regards to their school work. Purchase a planner for the child. Parents should explain the purpose of the planner to their children. Children should understand how they are expected to use the planner. It should be clear to the student that their parents and guardians will be regularly checking the planner to ensure that it is being properly used.

Parents can help their children choose their study area. With the child’s help, parents and guardians should choose paper, pens, pencils, markers, notepads, dictionaries and other supplies for the study area. Desk organizers should be purchased and utilized. Providing folders, binders and dividers will allow the students to keep their work organized and easy to find.

Stop Procrastination

Children who are learning study skills should be taught to stop procrastination. Parents should encourage their students to begin working on an assignment as soon as it has been assigned. If procrastination is a problem with their child, parents should speak to him about how to stop procrastination.

Awards should be given for assignments that are done early and done well. Parents who help their children stop procrastination are giving their children an invaluable tool which will help them through their years of higher education.

Encourage Persistence

Students should be taught the value of persistence. When an assigned task becomes difficult for a child, the parents should encourage her to keep working at the problem until it is solved. If the child is getting frustrated take a short 5 minute break and start again. Once the child has completed the assignment give him a reward and lavish him with praise.
