Toddler killed as fire razes thatched hut

A three-year old child died after a grass-thatched hut in which she was playing caught fire while her parents were harvesting beans at Kapele village, in Momba District, Mbeya Region, on Monday.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Diwani Athumani, said that the child, Blandina Alinjita, who was alone at the time, died at around 6am, adding that the body was taken to Momba District Hospital for a post-mortem.

“Preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was lighted by Brenda herself using a matchbox, but the police are still investigating the matter to establish the circumstances behind the accident,” he said.

In another incident, Mr Athumani, said police arrested six illegal immigrants from Ethiopia at Uyole in Mbeya city on Monday. He said the procedure to hand over the illegal immigrants to the Immigration department was in progress for them to be taken to court, adding that the suspects were being held at Mbeya central police station.

Mr Athumani named one of the suspects as Marcus Demsi (21) while the names of the rest were yet to be known.

Meanwhile, a motorbike taxi passenger died after the bike she had hired hit a lorry with registration number T 605 AJP along the Mbeya-Iringa Highway in Mbarali District, Mbeya Region, on Monday evening.

According to Mr Athumani, the passenger, who was identified as Sikujua Daudi (30), a resident of Majenje Igurusi in Mbeya city, died on the spot.

“The deceased’s body has been given to her relatives after a post-mortem at Mbeya Regional Hospital,” he said. He said the bodaboda rider, whose identity was not established, ran away after the accident and that police have embarked on manhunt for him allegedly causing the accident due to reckless riding.
