The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has collected over 2bn/- Value Added Tax (VAT) in Kagera region for the past three years.
The Acting Kagera Regional TRA Manager, Mr Lutufyo Mtafya, told reporters that the revenue was collected after introduction of Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) machines. He noted that during 2010 TRA collected over 7m/- in 2011/2012, over 6m/- and revenue collected increased to over 2bn/- in the financial year ending June this year.
“Using EFDs is quite promising. The success was largely due to Tax Payers’ education programmes which made conscious the business community on the importance of keeping proper business transactions for appropriate tax payment.
We have embarked on continuous education programmes in all districts of Muleba, Bukoba, Ngara, Karagwe, Biharamulo, Kyerwa and Misenyi to enrol more members,” he said. According to Mr Mtafya, the number of businessmen/ women enrolled under VAT were 171 out of who 152 were using Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs).
