The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in Kagera Region destroyed illicit liquor in sachets (viroba) worth 100m/-, which was smuggled in from a neighbouring country during the past financial year.
Acting TRA Regional Manager, Mr Magari Murya, said the items were seized at various entry points including Mutukula and Kanyigo, in Misenyi District.
He noted that suspects who were caught in the exercise also paid fines amounting to 11m/-. He appealed to residents in the region to cooperate with TRA officials by exposing people engaging in smuggling.
Mr Murya elaborated that TRA in the region collected over 465m/- within a period of three months from August to October, this year, from motor vehicles using electronic fiscal devices (EFDs).
He said during August, this year, the Authority collected 89.9m/-, while in September revenue increased to 189.2m/- and during October, a total of 185.8/- was collected.
He said motor vehicle owners could now pay taxes using their mobile phones instead of travelling long distances to TRA regional offices. He urged residents in the region to utilise the opportunity by paying taxes using mobile phones.
