Accommodation at Tsauchab River Camp, Namibia
Tsauchab River Lodge offers a variety of accommodation, but it is famous for the campsites. Each of the campsites is exclusive and isolated. Campers feel alone in the shadows of the Tsaris and Naukluft mountains and this ensures total tranquility at the camps. The campsites are shady with wild fig trees in abundance.
The campsites have exclusive ablutions with hot and cold water, while some even offer the alternative of showering in the open inside a wild fig tree. A “donkey” (a stone built fireplace with a tank installed and heated by a fire) provides hot water to the shower and basin inside the tree. The alternative toilet consists of a pit latrine without any walls and makes for interesting use of the facilities.
Four of the eight campsites are accessible with normal sedan vehicles while the other four can be accessed with 4×4 or 4×2 vehicles with sufficient ground clearance. The campsites are not electrified and electricity for emergency use must be obtained from reception.
A tented camp accommodates tourists not in the mood to camp and three chalets, with electric lights but no electricity provide luxury accommodation where the disturbance of the natural vegetation has been kept to the minimum.
Activities at Tsauchab River Camp, Namibia
Hiking trails
Several well-marked hiking trails into the Tsaris Mountains on the farm provide excellent bird watching and the exploration of the fauna and flora of the area. These trails vary from short walks to the lookout point, to longer walks visiting the natural spring on the property and all offer spectacular views of the valleys surrounding the resort.
4×4 Trail
A clearly marked trail leads off-road enthusiasts through the Tsaris Mountains. Although the grading of the trail is a 3-4, two descends along the way would cause even the most seasoned 4×4 travelers to sweat. With names like “Dopsteekhoogte” (Afrikaans for a hill where you need an alcoholic beverage), the mood for the trail is set. Despite these obstacles, most of the trail is relaxing and several bird and wildlife species are prolific along the route.
With plenty to keep tourists busy, typical warm Namibian hospitality and tranquil surroundings, Tsauchab River Camp is a tourist destination on its own.
