Twiga Stars jet off Thursday to Lusaka


The national women’s football team, Twiga Stars, are expected to leave on Thursday morning for Lusaka ahead of their African Women Championship (AWC) qualifier against hosts Zambia.

Zambia are set to host the Twiga Stars for the second round, first-leg match of the continental qualifiers at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Saturday. A statement released by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Information Officer, Boniface Wambura, said that the local queens’ send-off will be held tomorrow morning at TFF headquarters.

He said Twiga Stars delegation to Zambia will be led by Ahmed Idd Mgoyi, who is a member of the TFF executive committee. The match will be handled by Rwandan referee Salma Mukansanga, who will be assisted by compatriots Francine Ingabire, Sandrine Murangwa and Angelique Tuyishime.

The match commissioner will be Jackey Gertse from Namibia. Twiga Stars assembled in camp last week in Dar es Salaam ready to plot the downfall of Zambia.

Head coach Rogasian Kaijage has named 30 players who have been training seriously for the double header clash. The players include Amina Ally, Anastazia Anthony, Belina Juliu, Donisia Daniel, all from Lord Baden Secondary School in Coast region, Amisa Athuman (Marsh Academy), Asha Rashid alias ‘Mwalala’ (Mburahati Queens) and Aziza Mwadini from Zanzibar.

Others are Esther Chabruma alias ‘Lunyamila’ (Sayari Queens), Evelyn Sekikubo (Kwimba College), Fatuma Bushiri (Simba Queens), Fatuma Hassan (Mburahati Queens), Fatuma Issa (Evergreen) and Fatuma Mustapha (Sayari Queens).


The list also has Fatuma Omari (Sayari Queens), Happiness Hezron (Copa Coca- Cola Ilala), Maimuna Hamisi (U20 Tanzanite), Maimuna Said (JKT), Mwajuma Abdallah (Real Tanzanite), Mwapewa Mtumwa (Sayari Queens), Najiat Abbas (Makongo Sekondari) and Neema Paul, who has been promoted from the U-20 national squad dubbed The Tanzanite.

Kaijage has also called Pulkeria Charaji (Sayari Queens), Semeni Abeid (Real Tanzanite), Shelder Boniface (Makongo Secondary), Sophia Mwasikili (Sayari Queens), Theresa Yona (TSC Academy), Vumilia Maarifa (Evergreen) and Zena Khamis (Mburahati Queens).

The ninth edition of AWC qualification first leg matches will be played on February 13, 14 or 15 and the return leg will held on February 28, March 1 or 2. Should Twiga Stars dispatch Zambia they will face a second round hurdle against winners of the first round match between Botswana and Zimbabwe in the first leg which will be held on May 23, 24 or 25 and the return leg will be held on June 6, 7 or 8.

Twiga Stars qualified for their first CAF Women’s Championship finals on June 5, 2010, after defeating Eritrea 11-4 on aggregate. Twiga Stars won 8-1 in Dar es Salaam on May 23 and drew 3-3 in Asmara on June 5.
