Two jailed for 100 years over murder


High court sitting in Rukungiri has sentenced Joshua Turyasingura alias Mafiyonso, 26, to 50 years in prison for murdering Robert Arinaitwe who was a teacher at Immaculate Girls Secondary School in Rukungiri.

The High court session presided over by Justice Joseph Murangira heard that on 26th Nov. 2011 at Kayembe Cell, Kinyasano ward, Western division in Rukungiri Municipality, Turyasingura who is a resident of Bwashwa cell in Bwindi Kayonza sub county Kanungu district together with another person identified as Natuwhera Naboth alias Kabina a businessman on Karegyesa road murdered Robert Arinaitwe and robbed him of his belongings that included money and mobile phone.

Prosecution led by Resident State Attorney, Batson Baguma said after the murder and theft the suspects, Turyasingura Joshua and Naboth Natuwhera were arrested in March 2012.

While in Court Turyasingura who was accused of two counts of murder and robbery confessed to the charges but Natuwhera who is the co-accused denied the charges. The defense lawyer, Milton Matsiko in his submission asked court to be lenient in passing the judgment as accused had not wasted courts’ time and he seemed to have repented.


However, Justice Joseph Murangira while passing the judgment said that he has considered the submissions of both parties the prosecution and the defence and the fact that he has not wasted courts’ time, each account of murder and aggravated robbery will attract 50 years in prison but served concurrently.

Meanwhile the same court also sentenced, Edison Tukamuhebwa   to 50 years in prison for the murder of Edward Arinaitwe.

Prosecution told court that on 14th April 2013 Edison Tukamuhebwa of Butare, Nyarugunda parish, Nyakishenyi sub county Rukungiri district murdered one Edward Arianitwe.
