One of the country’s historic but neglected roads, Uhuru Road, which runs from Buguruni to Mnazi mmoja, will soon turn into an ultra-modern four lane highway.

Works Deputy Minister Mr Gerson Lwenge

The Deputy Minister for Works, Eng. Gerson Lwenge, told Parliament yesterday that design work on the project is complete and that now the government is looking for funds.

“A tender to get a contractor for repairs was advertised in October after failure to get one during the first time as no contractor qualified,” Eng. Lwenge noted.

Responding to Ilala legislator (CCM), Mussa Zungu had asked when the government will construct this historic road to modern bitumen standards.

Lwenge further noted that 1.32bn/- from Road Fund was used for spot improvement on Uhuru Road. “This year 500m/- from the Road Fund and 407m/- in development funds has been set aside for spot improvement on delicate portions of the road,” the deputy minister noted.

In another development, the government has set aside over 3.7bn/- to construct 310.26 kms between Katavi and Rukwa regions. Deputy Minister for Works, Eng. Gerson Lwenge, told Parliament while responding to Special Seats legislator (Chadema), Rosweeter Kasikila who asked when the road stretch will be constructed to bitumen standard.

“Each year, money is set aside for the maintenance of this road. In 2012/13, over 2.08bn/- was set aside for the maintenance of this same road,” Eng. Lwenge noted.

In another development, Deputy Minister Lwenge said work on 54kms Mikumi to Lumecha road stretch will be open this fiscal year after 250m/- has been set aside to repair it.

“The government has already started looking for a consultant who will do a feasibility study on the Kidatu- Lupiro-Kilosa kwa Mpepo- Londo-Lumecha (512kms) to bitumen standards by announcing an open tender on January 30, 2012,” Eng. Lwenge said.
