United States is lately believing Tanzania is not a good place to visit for travelers. The State Department has cautioned its citizens citing crime, terrorism and targeting people over gender identity.
The advisory stated violent crime is common in the African country and travelers may risk kidnapping, assault, carjacking and sexual assault.
The State Department noted that terrorist groups are plotting attacks in the country while LGBTI persons have been harassed, targeted, arrested or charged with unrelated offences.
In a statement released Wednesday the warning adds, “Individuals detained under suspicion of same-sex sexual conduct could be subject to forced anal examinations.”
The advisory mentioned local police in Tanzania may not have appropriate rosources to respond if there is violent crime.
The State Department mentioned further that terrorism may target police stations, mosques, embassies and other places which are frequently visited by Westerners.
An official data in Tanzania reveals several attacks were carried out last year by masked gunmen and about three dozen police and local political officials were killed in the Pwani region.
In October the Dar es Salaam Governor Paul Makonda said, “I have received reports that there are so many homosexuals in our city, and these homosexuals are advertising and selling their services on the internet.”
The governor urged people to report if gays are seen in the city.
Last year Donald Trump designated Tanzania at Level 2 scale travel destination. The highest is Level 4. Uganda and Kenya too are in Level 2.
