Local investors have been urged to make use of technologies introduced by the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organisation (TIRDO) to produce high quality products.
Speaking at the ongoing 37th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), TIRDO Eng. Julius Mbago described the organisation as critical to the promotion of industrial development in the country.“Research forms an integral part of industrial development,” he said.
Eng. Mbago said the privatisation of public corporations a couple of years ago reduced the significance of TIRDO, as most of the investors, foreigners in particular, did not make use of the institution’s research.
He said there were ongoing government initiatives to review TIRDO Act to ensure that locally made and imported machines for manufacturing various food and non-food products meet the required standards.
“Currently there is no law that regulates the standards of machines to ensure that the products made do not affect consumers,” he said, adding that, “the move would also help the locally made products to meet the international standards.”
Mr Mbago said currently TIRDO was working closely with Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in ensuring that the products made meet the local and international standards particularly on consumer safety.
TIRDO owns modern laboratory for testing various food products to ensure they meet the required standards.
He said the review of the law will also help the industrial research institute to conduct research commercially and boost its capacity to conduct more research on various fields.
TIRDO is mandated to assist the local industrial sector through provision of technical expertise and support services to upgrade their technology base.
