Vodacom Tanzania Managing Director Rene Meza said in a statement that the interruption to the M-Pesa services resulted from a planned upgrade of the service that however triggered unforeseen problems in the system.

“We would like to apologise to our esteemed customers, business and banking partners and the general public, for their inability to access our M-Pesa service due to a planned upgrade of the M-Pesa system on September 21, 2013,” he said.

Mr Meza said the system upgrade was scheduled to start at 00:00 hrs and end at 04:00 hrs but it triggered eight hours of system issues which made it necessary to shut down certain aspects of the M-Pesa service.

“Whereas the upgrade was successfully implemented, the change unfortunately, triggered eight hours of system issues which necessitated that we shut down certain aspects of the M-Pesa service,” he said in the statement.

The Vodacom boss said the M-Pesa services were restored on Sunday afternoon after its technicians identified the problem that caused a system failure.

“Our technical teams worked hard to resolve these issues and were successfully able to identify and address the cause of the system failure. The enhanced M-Pesa services were fully restored by 17:30 hours the same day,” he said.
