A Section of voters in Turbo have threatened to move to court to block new officials selected for the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) committee.
Elisha Kipkorir Busienei
“There were two polling stations; one in Kiplombe and another in KPA area. But there was no election in KPA. This was a plan by area MP Elisha Busenei to deny residents an opportunity to participate,” complained Ms Peris Mkanjala, an aspirant.
The five-member committee has only one woman, with locals saying it does not meet the one-third gender threshold required by the Constitution in any public office.
“Out of the five people elected there is only one woman, which is against the constitutional requirement on gender,” said Ms Mkanjala.
They accused the area legislator of having those who helped him in the March 4 polls in the committee.
ONE WOMAN
When contacted through phone, Busienei admitted having one woman in the team but said there was nothing wrong. “It is true only one woman was elected in the CDF committee but that is not a problem since at least there is a woman,” he said.
Meanwhile, confusion marred CDF elections in Gilgil constituency after area residents proceeded with the exercise despite a court order barring the elections from taking place.
