The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Executive Committee has appointed Boniface Wambura acting secretary general effective Saturday.
Newly-elected TFF president Jamal Malinzi said in a statement on Sunday Wambura replaces Angetile Osiah, who has been ordered to take a paid leave until his contract expires next month.
Wambura also continues to be the federation’s information officer. “The TFF Executive Committee appeals to clubs, district and regional football associations, TFF affiliates and soccer stakeholders to cooperate with Wambura in implementing his duties,” Malinzi said.
Osiah and Wambura, who are both journalists by profession, were employed by TFF in January 2011 on a two-year renewable contract. In June this year former TFF president Leodegar Tenga extended the contract for six months and is due to expire on December 31, this year.
Other officials whose contract expires on that date are Technical Director Sunday Kayuni and Marketing Director Jimmy Kabwe. Malinzi, a 53-year-old businessman, was voted into office last Sunday after collecting 73 votes to beat his rival, former TFF first vice-president Athumani Nyamlani who garnered 52 votes The post of vice-president went to another ‘outsider’ Wallace Karia, who outclassed outgoing second vice-president Ramadhan Nassib and former Young Africans chairman Iman Madega. Malinzi promised changes within the TFF as a move to improve service delivery in the federation.
He said soon after he was elected that he would disband all TFF committees and set up new ones. By sacking Osiah he definitely fulfills his desire to streamline TFF’s leadership and bring in new faces that will assist him to implement his development plans.
The new boss, however, acknowledged that his leadership will have to overcome various challenges in order to attain success. He mentioned some of challenges that need quick solutions as competition facing the country’s football at the moment. He vowed to ensure the ladies national teams from the youth to the senior level get a sponsor.
“We’re faced with various international competitions including a return leg match of FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup qualifier against Mozambique next week, senior Women Africa qualifiers early next year, CECAFA Challenge Cup this month in Nairobi, Kenya and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
All these require quick preparations,” he said. Handing over the office to Malinzi his predecessor Tenga said more money was expected to be poured next week and advised the newly elected leader to always allow auditing and ensure transparency is maintained. “I also handover a new constitution, land, technical centre with artificial grass as well as six vehicles and one tractor,” he said adding that a technical centre was finished just waiting auditing and the handover.
Tenga said his leadership built foundation and Malinzi now has to focus on soccer development. He emphasised on sustaining the good things under his leadership while working on the shortcomings. He also urged Malinzi to develop youth and children football, help development of women football and strengthen unity among clubs and TFF affiliate members.
“Wrangles should not be allowed in modern football and there should be close co-operation between TFF and Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA),” said Tenga.
