‘We are not too old to serve govt’ – Kabwegyere

The Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, has lashed out at people who tell him and his agemates in the Government to retire due to old age.

“Some people say we are old, but do you see any wrinkles on me?” Kabwegyere asked, adding, “We have just started.”

He was on Friday speaking as a chief guest during the party of Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, the newly appointed state minister for health in charge of general duties, at Mutojo village, Kyangyenyi sub-county in Sheema district.

Kabwegyere said when serving in Government, one is not appreciated but only gets criticisms. He added that in government systems there are many saboteurs.

“If you think you are going to work and be appreciated, forget it,” Kabwegyere told Tumwesigye.

Tumwesigye said tackling AIDS, improving human resources and motivating the health workers with non-monetary incentives will be his priority.

“We have health-workers, especially in rural areas who need to access computers and good accommodation,” Tumwesigye said.

He said although the sector is currently taking a fair share of the national budget, it needs to get more resources.

The former bishop of West Ankole Diocese, the Rev. William Magambo, lauded Museveni for appointing Tumwesigye, saying: “We need to begin appointing people who are Godly, people who will make policies which are pro-people.”

Magambo also called for mechanisms to give voters an opportunity to vet and interview leaders before they elect them to any position.
