Tanga Regional Commissioner (RC), Ms Chiku Galawa has therefore called on the Land, Natural Resource and Environment Parliamentary Committee to develop the caves, which are economically prospective areas for further development.

She said the fissures which are of its kind in the region would generate revenue through tourism and at the same time provide employment to youths who can be employed as tour guides. She further said that time has come for the antiquities department to avail the cavern to the regional authority, because the touristic area had remained idle for many years.

“The place is economically potential but it is in a sad situation even few people visiting there wonder why such a place had been left undeveloped,” she insisted. Responding to the Regional Commissioner’s request, the Committee Chairman, Mr James Lembeli promised to solve the matter in collaboration with other committee members.

He said the committee would hold talks with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism through antiquities department, to see how best the matter could be handled. “We will make a follow up and see what the law says, but we promise that we shall soon meet and probably we can invite you to attend the meeting. We appreciate efforts you have put forward in solving this issue” said Mr Lembeli.

The committee members were in Tanga Region for a two-day tour, where they also inspected the construction of affordable house project being implemented by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) in Mkinga District.
