Tanzania is gearing up for the general election scheduled to be held on October 25 and it is believed to be the closest elections in the history of the country.
The campaigns have been kicked off lately and as of now the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party seems to be having a clear edge. However, this could be easily eroded in coming weeks as their missteps could be highlighted. More to this, the opposition parties this are more united compared to all the previous presidential and parliamentary elections.
Since the return to multiparty democracy in 1992 the CCM has always monopolized the political power. The party has worn all the presidential election until now and also had good parliamentary majorities in legislature.
The party as well as its precursor TANU flourished under the Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania. He had good organizational skills.
Now, after a long journey of 23 years as the ruling party in Tanzania, its appeal is fading gradually and retaining the national power seems challenging to a great extent. There are several reasons to it including the favor of President Jakaya Kikwete‘s to Foreign Minister Bernard Membe to succeed him.
However, apart from all these assumption, it is not to forget the CCM is the largest and oldest party in Tanzania. It is highly organized adn resourced too. It has strong hold in rural areas and farmers seem to be their loyal voters.
Now it is too soon to predict the results. The election is still five weeks away and even five days are enough to change the flow.
