All legal roads from around the continent are heading for Arusha as the city hosts the Colloquium on women and judiciary in Africa at the New Mount Meru Hotel.
A statement from Ms Mary Gwera, the Information Officer for Judiciary of Tanzania, stated that the Chief Justice, Judge Mohammed Othman Chande, opens the symposium today.
The two-day “Colloquium on women and judiciary in Africa,” is organized by the “International Commission of Jurists,” in conjunction with the Judiciary of Tanzania, International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) and the Tanzania Women Judges Association (TWJA).
Among other things, the forum will address the challenges being faced by female judges, women judiciary associations as well as deficits and needs for education in reinforcing and empowering this judicial segment.
Many countries have sent in their women judges’ delegations and these include, Swaziland, South-Africa, Lesotho, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Sierra-Leone, Mozambique, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, Mauritius and the host Tanzania, among others.
Arusha, on the other hand, is expected to host another similar but more global judiciary event next year. The International Association of Women Judges will be bringing its members from all over the world here for the IAWJ’s 12th Biennial International Conference which has been scheduled to take place at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).
The 2014 meeting will mark three years after this country produced the President for the global women judges association in the person of Justice Eusebia Munuo of the Supreme Court of Tanzania, who acceded to the presidency of the IAWJ during the organization’s 11th Biennial International Conference in London.
