The President of Zanzibar, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, has called on Zanzibaris to feel proud of the achievements attained so far, in the education sector.
He says that the challenges that beset the sector at the moment should not stop them from pursuing further goals.
Opening a two-day education symposium in commemoration of 50 years of the Zanzibar Revolution, Dr Shein said that there is a lot to be proud of in the sector which has improved significantly in the course of fifty years.
A statement issued by the Office of the Press Secretary quoted President Shein as saying that “We have every reason to celebrate the achievements we have attained in the education sector and we should keep moving forward.” Dr Shein said that challenges in the education sector frustrate even the most developed countries.
He added that an improved education sector should be the priority of Zanzibar. The president pointed out that the government is working on modalities that will see an education sector that has all requisite facilities from nursery schools to institutional level.
Dr Shein commended the free education-for-all which was introduced by former President Amani Abeid Karume. The initiative opened a new chapter in the education sector as it guaranteed education for all regardless of financial status.
He said that the arrangement has increased the number of pupils enroled in primary schools from 19,106 to 247,353. Dr Shein directed that commitment and hard work be invested in the education sector so that the targeted goals are met.
“The government will ensure that educational policies do not give room to classes in society.
Instead, the State will envisage promoting the education system with a view to ensuring that every school age child gets access to education,” he said.
On education standards, Dr Shein said that various projects and programmes are underway to improve examination performance in primary, secondary and other levels of education.
