It will soon be easy for interested people including tourists to learn about Zanzibar’s 1964 revolution should the ongoing plan to construct a memorial tower succeed.
Zanzibar has already approved the construction of “revolution memorial tower” at Michenzani area in Zanzibar, the Minister of State- Second Vice President Office Mr Mohammed Aboud Mohammed has said.
Mohammed said that the planned tower “will be symbolic, containing enough information about the history of revolution, and also the aim is to attract tourists to the tower.”
Each year Zanzibar leaders are joined by civilians to mark the revolution Day. He said that as Zanzibar marks the 50th anniversary of the revolution, it is important to have the tower constructed as soon as the funds are available.
“The premises of the tower will have a leisure centre, and shopping centre,” said Mohammed.
The Minister said that the government is now soliciting about a billion shillings for the project expected to be ready by 2015. The climax of the 50th anniversary of revolution is scheduled for January 12, next year.
