Zanzibar women football league gathers pace


Kidimni Queens recovered to beat Mkoani Queens 1-0 in a closely contested match of the Zanzibar Women football league at Dunga grounds here on Wednesday.

Spoonful fans who turned up to witness the encounter were treated to a thrilling football as both teams kept the ball low.

The match started in a cracking pace as the ball swung from one end to the other but it was the victors who had an upper hand.

The two sides settled for a goalless draw at the breather. After the restart, both teams made several changes which benefitted Kidimni Queens as they pressed forward relentlessly and managed to grab the solitary goal in the 70th minute through Rachael Sospeter.

In their previous encounter, Kidimni Queens succumbed to a humiliating 6-0 defeat at the hands of New Generation. The league will continue today at two different venues.

Kidimni Queens will face Bungi Sisters at Bungi grounds, while at Dunga grounds Women Fighters will battle it out against Mkoani Queens.


Meanwhile, Shangani FC marched into the final of the Mtoano Cup after beating Ujamaa 2-1 at the Mao Tse Tung Stadium here. Shangani FC opened the scoring just three minutes from the kick off through Mustafa Hamad.

They added the second after half an hour mark, when Hamad caught defenders off guard to grab his brace. Ujamaa started the second half strongly and managed to pull one back in the 76th minute when Saadat Bakari blasted home.

The second semi-final that pitted Jang’ombe Boys and Mafunzo was set for late yesterday at the same venue.
